Numberlink

Numberlink is a connect the numbers game. Join each pair of matching numbers with a path; paths can’t cross, and together they fill every square. Free for ages 5 to 8.

How to play

Join each pair of matching numbers with a path; paths can’t cross, and together they fill every square. Free for ages 5 to 8.

  1. Choose a puzzle size: Starter (3×3 and 4×4) or Explorer (5×5).
  2. Find two squares with the same number. Tap one of them to start its path.
  3. Tap the squares next to the end of the path, one at a time, to stretch it. You can also drag along the squares.
  4. Link the path to the other square with the same number. Paths go up, down, left or right, and they never cross.
  5. Do the same for every pair. When all the pairs are linked, every square has to be covered too.
  6. Made a mistake? Tap a square on a path to cut it back to there, or use Undo or Erase path.

Hint never draws for you. It outlines the next square for one path, or tells you where a path went off the way.

What children learn

  • Planning a route: thinking ahead about where each path can go before it blocks another.
  • Spatial reasoning: seeing a grid as lanes, corners and gaps to fill.
  • Matching and persistence: keeping track of several pairs and trying a different way when one fails.

Questions about Numberlink

What is Numberlink?

Numberlink is a connect the numbers game, a path puzzle on a square grid. Some squares hold a number, and each number appears twice. You join every pair with a path of neighboring squares. Paths cannot cross or share a square, and together they fill the whole grid. A well-made Numberlink has exactly one solution.

What is the aim of Numberlink?

To connect each pair of matching numbers so that all squares are used. Linking the pairs is not enough on its own: if a square is left empty, the puzzle is not finished yet.

What age is Numberlink good for?

The 3×3 and 4×4 Starter puzzles suit children from about age 5, and the 5×5 Explorer puzzles suit ages 6 to 8. A younger child can start by linking one pair at a time.

Where does Numberlink come from?

Numberlink is a classic pencil puzzle from Japanese puzzle magazines, where it is also called Arukone. It is played on paper with numbers or letters in the squares. The puzzles here are Mathumo’s own selection.

How do you solve a Numberlink puzzle?

Start where the choices are fewest. A number in a corner has only two ways out, and a square squeezed between other paths can only go one way. Link those first, then see which squares are left. If a path gets stuck, tap it to cut it back and try a different way.
